still / life

The series’ title holds two meanings, both essential to the understanding of the series. “Still-life,” as in the tradition of painting or drawing arrangements of objects – and “still life” in the sense of prevailing, of being alive.  These highly rendered objects drawn from direct observation express time, space, light and shadow, as we understand them in the created order. To the thoughtful eye, this high realism and sense of three-dimensionality is inconsistent with the iridescent gold that holds it. The sacredness of the everyday is spoken to. The gold “ground” is God, Glory, and the infinite – all which is not created. The nod to traditional icons is there but not in a disrespectful or presumptuous manner.
